Drinks Policy
Drinks and Energy Drinks
Students are encouraged to hydrate throughout the day for their health and wellness. We encourage families to provide water bottles that can be completely sealed to minimize spilling and damage to the school facility and equipment.
This excludes cups from Starbucks and Dutch Bros with lids that hold straws, or any pop-top cans. Students who bring these to school will be asked to finish them or dump it out at the beginning of their first class (8:30 Mon/Tues and Thurs/Fri; 9:30 on Wed.).
Energy drinks need to stay at home. The Center for Disease Control lists dehydration and increased anxiety as just two of the harmful side effects adolescents experience as a result of consuming energy drinks, while the American Academy of Pediatrics states that caffeine and other stimulant substances contained in energy drinks have no place in the diet of children and adolescents.
Our own experience is that students can’t focus, and then crash hard when they consume them. They aren’t supporting student health, they aren’t helping our students learn, they are unwelcome on our campus.
Staff will confiscate energy drinks when students have them in class or common areas. Unopened containers will be returned at the end of the day. Open containers will be dumped and disposed of.
